Goddess Bagalamukhi or Bagala is one of the ten mahavidyas (great wisdom goddesses) in Hinduism. Bagalamukhi Devi smashes the devotee's misconceptions and delusions with her cudgel. She is also known as Pitambara in Northern Parts of India.

The legend behind the origin of goddess Bagalamukhi is as follows. A demon named Madan undertook austerities and won the boon of vak siddhi, according to which anything he said came about. He abused this siddhi by killing people. Enraged by his mischief, the gods worshipped Bagalamukhi. She stopped the demon's rampage by taking hold of his tongue and stilling his speech. Before she could kill him, however, he asked to be worshipped with her, and she relented, that is why he is depicted with her. She is almost always portrayed in this act, holding a club in one hand, with which she is about to strike her enemy, and with the other hand pulling his tongue. In this myth, by stopping the demon's tongue, she exercises her peculiar power over speech and her power to freeze, stun, or paralyze.More than any of the other Mahavidyas, Bagalamukhi is associated with magical powers, which are sometimes referred to as siddhis, "accomplishments" or "perfections." Among her epithets in her hymn of a thousand names are She Who Gives The Eight Siddhis, She Who Gives Magical and Mystical powers (riddhis and siddhis), and She Who Gives All Siddhis. The invocation written around the edge of an amulet containing her yantra in the Tantrasara reads: "O Bagalamukhi, please arrest the speech of wicked people, paralyze their faces, fix their tongues and destroy their intellect." At the end of her stotra (hymn) in the Rudrayamala, it is said that those who worship her will be able to make their enemies deaf and dumb, destroy their intelligence, and turn their wealth to poverty.

Major temples to the goddess are situated in the Himachal Pradesh in the north, and at Nalkheda at Shajapur and Datia in Madhya Pradesh. Nepal, where the worship of tantric goddesses had Royal patronage, also has a large temple devoted to Bagalamukhi in the Newar city of Patan.

Shabari was a disciple of Matanga Rishi. She was quite aged and belonged to a race of Vanavasis called Bhils.

Sage Matanga said, “Shabari, to relieve the earth of its problems, soon in the house of King Dashratha, Shri Rama will be born, as an incarnation of Vishnu. I will not be fortunate enough to behold him. But he will certainly come to this ashram and you will have the good fortune of his darshan (sighting). Wait here till Shri Rama arrives.” With these words Sage Matanga achieved paramapad and left his earthly body.

Shabari, the true devotee, now dedicated her life to her guru’s words of advice, and spent her days waiting for Shri Rama’s arrival. Every day, she swept and cleaned the ashram, filled fresh water and gathered fruits and tubers for Shri Rama. She waited and waited for years on end. She became old and infirm, but the hope in her heart that Shri Rama would arrive, remained ever fresh.

At last, in search of Sita, Rama and Lakshman , arrived at Sage Matanga’s ashram after killing the demon Kabandha. Shabari welcomed them and washed their feet reverentially with tears that flowed from her eyes. Shri Rama asked here to fetch some fruit. Shabari offered him berries and fruits but before giving them to Shri Rama, she tasted each one of the berries. She forgot that she was feeding Shri Rama with berries that were bitten and therefore unfit and impure for offering to another. And swayed by her devotion, Shri Rama ate the berries with joy. It was a moment when the devotee and divine were joined in harmony.

Shri Rama was pleased with the devotion and care of the simple hearted Shabari. With the blessings of Shri Rama Shabari quit her earthly body and left for her heavenly abode. As told by Shabari, Shri Rama then continued on his way, to meet Sugreeva on the Rishyamukh Mountain, along with Lakshman . (Refer to the map for the place where Shabari met with Shri Ram). The tale of Shabari will never die because it is a benchmark for devotion and love towards God.

Lakshmi Narayan temple is located at the top of the Arera Hills which is the highest point in the District of Bhopal. Laxmi Narayan temple also famous as “Birla Mandir” devoted to Goddess Maa Laxmi. The Birla temple orders a panoramic view of the depiction ideal city.

Bharat Mata Temple, a sacred place of its own kind (growth) is situated in Sapt Sarovar close to ashram at Haridwar. The Mandir of Bharat Mata was originated by Swami Satyamitranand Giri. This temple was installed and introduced by Late Prime Minister of India, Smt. Indira Gandhi on 15th May, 1983.

The form of Bharat Mata represented as the mother goddess of India means Bharat Mata is the depicted as the mother goddess of India. Bharat Mata is also called as “Mother India” who is pictured as a woman in a form of saree with saffron color and she has also been holding the Indian flag in her one hand.

Bharat Mata temple is also called as “eight storied temple” cause of having eight stories. This temple is almost 180 feet high. Elevators are mounted in the temple to help the pilgrims. As Bharat Mata temple has eight stories that are based on a particular religious deities, theme, housing facts of many mythological legends (myths), leaders and freedom fighters. It is a way of veneration to all who played a central role in constitution of country.

On the first floor, a very beautiful statue of Bharat Mata is adorned in the hall by holding a pot of milk in one hand and a pile (collection) of grain in other hand.

On the second floor the ‘Shoor Mandir’ is devoted to the well-known the real heroes of India.

The third floor of the temple ‘Matru Mandir’ is devoted to the accomplishment of India’s honored women; such as Maitri, Meera Bai, Savitri etc.

The forth floor called as ‘Sant Mandir’ as it introduces the great saints of different religions such as Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism.

The fifth floor has Assembly Hall where coexistence all the experts religions are depicted in a symbolic form on the wall. The natural beauties of the India are also screened by paintings and historical facts.

The sixth floor is of all Goddess Shakti as various forms of the goddesses are there such as Sati, Durga, Parvati, Kali, Radha, Saraswati etc.

The seventh floor is devoted to Lord Vishnu with his incarnation like Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narsimha, Vamana, Parsurama, Rama, Krishna, Budhdha, Kalki etc.

The eighth floor is devoted to the shrine of Lord Shiva from which devotees can gain a panoramic view of Hardwar, Himalayas, and the grandeur of the whole campus of Sapta Sarovar.

Ashtalakshmi Temple is dedicated to “Goddess Laxmi” and was built in April 1996 with sand and cement. The consecration of this temple was done by Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swami, the Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. This temple is carved with different style – like the south Indian architecture.

In India, As Goddess Laxmi is the bestower of wealth, there is special place of her in all devotees. In Hindu pantheon, she brings happiness and prosperity and salvation also. The eight forms of Maa Lakshami are very splendid but it is not found in all temples except very few temples.

In the country, there are two Ashta Lakshmi temples, one is here in Hyderabad and other in Chennai. The design and structure of the temple was conceived by the famous architect named Ganapati Sthapathi. The statues of Goddess Ashtalakshmi, God Sriman Narayana, Lord Sri Ganapati and Sri Garuda were carved and designed by Sri. Subbaiah Sthapathi.

As Ashtalakshmi has her eight forms of Mahalakshmi. The forms are Santaana Lakshmi, Gaja Lakshmi, Dhana Lakshmi, Dhaanya Lakshmi, Vijaya Lakshmi, Dhairya Lakshmi, Adi Lakshmi and Vidya Lakshmi.

Now the temple of Ashtalakshmi has become the main center for the activities of religious and spiritual.

Bhadrakali Temple is known as one of the oldest and ancient temple in India dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. The temple of Bhadrakali is located in Warangal, Andhra Pradesh, India. The name of this temple was given after the goddess Bhadrakali.

It is said that the temple was built by Kakatiyas and situated on the hilltop close to bank of Bhadrakali Lake between Warangal and Hanamkonda. The deity of this temple is called as "Ammavaru" which means Mother Goddess. This temple is the only place where goddess Bhadrakali is presented in her several different forms and incarnation (Avtars).

It’s very remarkable thing that the image of the goddess is in the square shaped stone about 2.7 X 2.7 meters. The image of the goddess is much different than other images of goddess. The outlook of the image of the goddess is glorious with attractive eyes and face. Moreover the idol of the goddess can also be seen in the form of eight hands holding different weapons and with a crown on her head. On the opposite of the sanctum, the idol of the lion-a vehicle of Goddess Bhadrakali is placed.

Surrounding Bhadrakali Temple, there are 8 major and 12 minor temples in the mountains. This place has become the foremost visitor place and most of the people wish to visit this temple from all over India.

Karwa Chauth

The festival of Karwa Chauth is celebrated by Hindu and some Sikh women in North India and parts of Pakistan in which married women fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety and longevity of their husbands. The fast is observed in the states of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Western Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. In addition to the traditional items such as henna, beauty products and fashionable clothes, the demand of special eateries are also gearing up. Nowadays, Karwa Chauth is more of fun than a serious festival.

About an hour before moonrise, the women place their bayas over their karvas in a plate and assemble around the puja area to pray while an elderly lady narrates a tale about a young woman who by an unfortunate twist of fate was tricked into breaking her fast. The husband drops dead the very instance his wife breaks the fast. Enraged at the deception that led to her husband’s death the girl implores Gaur Mata to resurrect her husband. The husband finally comes back to life after a period of seven Karva Chauths during which time the young girl neither eats nor drinks. Thus the bride with her unflinching love for her husband and belief in Godess Parvati achieves the ‘impossible’. After the story is read out to everyone, the women exchange their respective karvas till each one gets her own karva back, while chanting the following:

Shitala Devi also called Sitala, is a Hindu goddess widely worshipped in North India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan as the pox-goddess. Shitala Devi literally means the cool Goddess.

In Hinduism, Goddess Sheetala Mata is considered an aspect of Shakti. Sheetala Mata is also considered as an incarnation of Goddess Parvati and Durga, which are two forms of Shakti. Goddess Shitala is popular as Mariamman in Tamil Nadu. She is undoubtedly one of the most popular rural deities and her origin can be traced to the days of Nature Worship.

Legend has it that Goddess Shitala wears a red-colored dress and rides around the villages in North India on a donkey (ass) and inflicting people with the dreaded pox –small pox, chicken pox etc. Symbolically, she represents Nature’s power of generating viruses causing disease and Nature’s healing power and is of tribal origin. She is depicted having four hands. In her four hands she carries a silver broom, winnow fan, small bowl and a pitcher with Gangajal, holy water from River Ganga. Occasionally, she is depicted with two hands carrying a broom and pitcher. Symbolically, Goddess Sheetala idol also emphasizes the need for cleanliness.

According to Puranas, Shitala, the cooling one, was created by Lord Brahma. She was promised by Brahma that she will be worshipped as a Goddess on earth but she should carry the seeds of lentils. In folktales in North India, the lentil is ‘Urad dal.’ She then asked for a companion and she was directed to Lord Shiva, who blessed her and created Jvara Asura (the fever demon). It is said that he was created from the sweat of Lord Shiva.

Shitala and Jvara Asura remained in Devaloka along with other gods and goddess. They used a donkey to transport the lentils to wherever they went. But the lentil seeds one day turned into smallpox germs and start to spread the disease among gods and goddesses. Finally, fed up with Goddess Shitala, gods asked her to go and settle in heaven where she will be worshipped. Shitala and Jvara Asura came down to earth and started hunting for a place to stay.

They went to the court of King Birat, an ardent devotee of Shiva. He agreed to worship her and give a place in his kingdom but she will not get the respect given to Shiva. An angry Shitala demanded supremacy over all other gods and when King Birat did not budge. She spread different kinds of pox on the land and finally, the King had to agree to her wishes. Soon the disease and all its after effects were miraculously cured.

The most important festival dedicated to her takes place in Chaitra month, the Ashtami day after Purnima (full moon) in the month is observed as Sheetala Ashtami. There are famous temples dedicated to Shitala Devi in Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Goddess Mansa Devi is a Hindu temple dedicated to goddess Mansa Devi, a form of Shakti, in the Panchkula district of Haryana state in India. The temple complex is spread of 100 acres of the Shivalik foothills in village Bilaspur, near Mani Majra, and Panchkula, 10 km from Chandi Mandir, another noted Devi shrine in the region, both just outside Chandigarh.

(Goddess on Shivalik Mountain near Haridwar). When the snake's offering in sacrifice was being conducted by Janmejaya, then god Brahma spoke to gods, "The population of snakes has decreased in the world in a big way. Now a saint named 'Zart-Karu' will have a son named 'Asteek'. He will stop the snake sacrifice." On enquiry of the gods Lord Brahma replied that wife of saint 'Zart- Karu' also will bear the same name. She will be sister of snake king 'Vasuki'. She will give birth to 'Asteek' and he will liberate the snakes.

Then a snake, named 'Aelapatr', said to the snake king Vasuki, "Keeping in view the plight of snakes, I feel you should give the hand of your sister 'Zart-Karu' to saint 'Zart-Karu'. When he will come for alms and ask for her hand, you should immediately offer her."

Meanwhile ocean-churning (Samundar-Manthan) took place. Vasuki was used as a rope in ocean-churning. So gods carried Vasuki to Lord Brahma and the lord asked him to marry his sister to saint Zart-Karu, as told by 'Aelapatr'. Vasuki ordered all the snakes of oworld to locate 'Zart-Karu' and asked them to inform him about the saint's wish to marry his sister.

Readers, this may be foretold that the wife of the same saint 'Zart-Karu' later became famous as 'Mansa Devi'. As per the story, the saint Zart-Karu had vowed to marry a girl of his own name and the girl should be offered in alms, so that the responsibility of looking after her does not fall upon him. Only on meeting the above condition the saint was ready to accept any girl as wife. So to fulfil the wishes (Mansa) of ancestors, wishes of gods and the vow of saint, the sister of 'Vasuki', 'Zart-Karu' became famous as wish fulfilling goddess.

Ambaji temple is considered as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas so shakti worship is celebrated in the form of Ambaji Mata (Mother) in India and it is said that the people of Gujarat take the name of “Maa Ambe” in high regard and with pride.

Since the period of pre-Vedic, this main shrine of deity has been worshipped. The goddess is also known as “Arasuri Amba” as it is situated on the Arasur hill, near the source of the “Saraswati River”, in the Aravalli mountain Range in the small town of Ambaji (named after the famous temple). The temple is near Gujarat (Palanpur) and Rajasthan (Mount Abu) borders.

The deity is a reflection of Shiva's associate, Parvati. Ambe Mata is the Adya Shakti- the original and primordial female power, the Goddess Mother.

Above the small temple, there is a red flag which heartily welcomes the silent wind. The Saptashrungi Devi temple is located at Vani near Nashik in Maharashtra. This temple is one among the 51 Shakti peethas located on the Indian subcontinent.

The Devi is said be swayambhu on a rock on the sheer face of a mountain. She is surrounded by seven (sapta-in Sanskrit) peaks (shrunga-in Sanskrit), hence the name- Sapta Shrungi Mata (mother of the seven peaks). The image of the Devi is huge-about 10 feet tall with 18 hands, holding various weapons. The idol is always coated with Sindoor, which is considered auspicious in this region. She is believed to be Mahishasur Mardini, the slayer of the demon Mahishasur, who took the form of a buffalo. Hence, at the foot of the hill, from where one starts climbing the steps, there is the head of a buffalo, made is stone, and believed to be that of the demon.

Saptashrungi Mata is a site of pilgrimage situated 60 km from Nashik. According to Hindu tradition, the goddess Saptashrungi Nivasini dwells within the seven mountain peaks. It is located in Vani, a small village located near Nashik in India. Devotees visit this place in large numbers every day

The temple, which sort of sticks to the cliff, is 1230 meters above sea level. There is an old path with steps cut out of the mountain, which starts right at the foothills, at Vani and goes all the way to the mountain. However, now, a motorable road has been built, which goes up to an altitude of 1150 meters. From this place one has to climb around 500 steps to reach the shrine, which only takes about forty five minutes.

Hindu Goddess is a Bahuchara Mata. Goddess Bahuchar Mata Father Name is a charan Bapal dan Detha. She and her sister were on journey with a caravan when a marauder named Bapiya attacked their caravan. It was common practice in charan men and women if overpowered by their enemies, not to surrender but to kill themselves. Shedding the blood of charan was considered heinous sin. When Bapiya attacked the caravan, Bahuchara and her sisters announced tragu and cut their breasts. A legend tells that Bapiya was cursed and became impotent. The curse was lifted only when he worshiped Bahuchara Mata by dressing and acting like woman. Today Bahuchara mata is considered patroness of and worshipped by the hijra commu nity in India. Her followers believe in non-violence and consider killing of all animals and creatures a sin.

The temple of Bahuchara Mata is located in Becharaji town in Mehsana district of Gujarat, India. It is 110 km from Ahmedabad and 35 km west of Mahesana. The original temple complex was built in year 1783 AD. The temple is nicely decorated with stone carving. Every year 1.5 million pilgrims visit this temple. Toda Goddess Bahuchara Mata is located in Sankhalpur. The origin of Bahuchra Mata is situated at Varakhdiwala temple in Bechraji. Because Bhakta Vallabha Dhola wrote in his Aanand no Garbo the original place of Bahuchra Mata is situated at between Sankhalpur and Dedana village. The Toda Mata temple in Sankhalpur is 2 kilometers fare from Bechraji (Bahuchraji).

The temple is beautifully decorated with ancient carvings and paintings on the wall. South and North gate are structured with carved and decorated zharukha. There is also havan mandap for yagna. Big meeting hall is also build by temple trust to organize meetings and other functions. Temple is structured using vastu shastra. Fairs are held here at every chaitra and ashadhi purnima, full moon day. On this day numbers of devotees visits the temple.

Goddess Karni Mata was born in the 14 century since October 2, 1387 in the village of Suwap in the Jodhpur district of Rajasthan. The seventh daughter of Mehoji Charan and his wife Deval Devi, her original name was Ridhu bai. According to legend, she earned the honorific name Karni at age six by miraculously curing her aunt. Term meaning "mother" was commonly added to the names of those worshipped as mother goddesses. She married Dipoji Charan of the village of Sathika around AD 1415 but did not live a conventional "married life."

Later on she arranged the marriage of her husband with her younger sister Gulab. She lived in her in-laws' village for about two years before leaving with her followers and a herd of cattle to live a nomadic life, camping at sunset. One such a camp was made at village Jangloo, but a servant of Rao Kanha who was ruler of the place denied them access to water for people and cows. On this, Karni Mata declared her follower Rao Ridmal of Chandasar as new ruler of the village and continued on her journey. When she reached near Deshnok, Rao Kanha himself came to oppose her camping but he died. Karni mata stopped further wandering and started living there. Her husband Depoji died in AD 1454. Rats became sacred in her temple when Karni Mata's stepson Laxman drowned in a tank he was attempting to drink from.

Karni mata implored Yama, the god of Death; though he at first refused, Yama eventually relented, permitting Laxman and all of Karni mata's male children to be reincarnated as rats. In AD 1453, she gave her blessing to Rao Jodha of Jodhpur in conquering Ajmer, Merta and Mandor. In 1457, she went to Jodhpur at Rao Jodha's request to lay the cornerstone of the fort at Jodhpur.

Karni Mata Temple 600 year old this Temple is also callings Rat Temple, a famous mystic of her times, believed to be an incarnation of goddess Durga. Here, rats are considered holy, owing to the belief, which the souls of the devotees of the Mata are resident in these rats and, consequently, they must be looked after. The huge silver gates to the temple, and the marble carvings were donated by Maharaja Ganga Singh.

People from far and wide come to pay religious tribute to Goddess karni mata. Outside rajasthan, places like Gujrat, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana are areas where mata is greatly respected and loved. During the time of navratri thousands flock to mata's temple on foot. It is becoming one of the holiest and most faithful places in India.

Goddess Renuka was the daughter of the king Renu of Kubaj country and the wife of the sage Jamadagni. Renuka Mata is the Mother of Parshuram. When the king Sahastrarjuna paid a visit to Jamadagni in his abode, he was taken by surprise by the hospitality of the sage. When asked about the same, the sage told him that it is all because of the Kamadhenu cow that fulfils the desires of the owner given to him by Indra.

Thinking that if the Kamadhenu was in his possession he would be able to maintain his vast army easily, the king Sahastrarjuna tried to seize the Kamadhenu from the sage by farce when his request to hand over the Kamadhenu to him was turned down by the sage. In the scuffle that ensued the sage died and his wife Renuka was injured due to 21 wounds she had received at the hands of the king. At this juncture many soldiers appeared on the scene from the body of the Kamadhenu by divine magic and farced the king to retreat.

On coming to know of the above incident Parasuram, the son of Jamadagni who rushed there vowed to defeat and punish the king 21 times. His mother asked him to cremate his father. He carried his father and mother to Mahur and cremated his father there. His mother became a sati.

The religious rites were conducted on this occasion by the God Sri Dattatreya himself. However, after everything was over Parasuram was stricken by grief and at this time a voice from the heavens told him that his mother would came out from the earth but he should not look behind. Being eager to see his mother, Parasuram just saw behind far a fraction of a second to find the mother's face aver the earth. The upper facet is the present upper facet of the Renukadevi.

Renuka Devi is adorned with various gold ornaments such as the golden flowers to be used as earrings, gold garlands (putal mal candrahar, jaymal, etc.), and nose-ring.

Gandhari is a Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. Gandhari is the Daughter of King Subala in Gandhara. Gandhari's marriage was arranged to Dhritarashtra, the eldest prince of the Hastinapur.

Gandhari voluntarily blindfolded herself throughout her married life. Her husband Dhritarashtra was born blind, and on meeting him and realizing this, she decided to protest silently by blindfolding herself to in order to make the Bheeshma feel the guilt.

Gandhari bore a hundred sons, (the Call of Kauravas). Gandhari’s eldest son of Duryodhana, Dushasana and one daughter Dushala was married Jayadratha.

Gandhari was also devout; in particular an ardent worshipper of Lord Shiva. Gandhari's sacrifice of her eyesight and her austere life was to grant her great spiritual power. Gandhari made a single exception to her blindfolded state, when she removed her blindfold to see Duryodhana rendering his entire body except his loins invulnerable to any foe. This was however to prove fruitless as Bhima smashed Duryodhana's thighs in their decisive encounter on the eighteenth day of the Kurukshetra battle, a move both literally and figuratively below the belt.

Kunti was young, a sage (Durvasa) told her a "mantra" with which Kunti could summon any god and have a child by him.

Kunti could not believe the mantra, so she tried to use it. The Sun God, Surya, appeared. She asked him to go back, but Surya said he was compelled to fulfill the mantra before returning. Surya magically caused Kunti to bear a child immediately so that she, a princess, would not be subject to questions from the King or his court. Kunti then discarded the child, Karna, in a basket in a river. Karna was later found by a charioteer of Kunti's future brother-in-law.

Later on, Kunti married Prince Pandu of Hastinapur. Pandu had a blind elder brother, Dhritrashtra. When Pandu's father died, Pandu, and not Dhrithrashtra, became King. According to the laws of the time, a blind man could not rule unless he was the only heir to the dead king. Thus Pandu, a younger son, came to the throne. Pandu, as was the custom of the time, took a second wife, Madri.

One day, Pandu, Madri, and Kunti were hunting for sport in a forest. Pandu used a magical arrow intended to kill a stag. Before dying, the man, who was on his way to his wife, cursed Pandu that the latter would die the moment he touched his wife.

Pandu, grief-stricken that he could not have any children, abdicated the throne and left in self-imposed exile. While in the forest, Pandu yearned for the children he could not have. Then, Kunti revealed her secret mantra. She used it thrice, first receiving a son Yudishtira from god Yama, next for Bhima from god Vayu, and third for Arjuna, from god Indra. Kunti revealed the mantra to Madri, who bore two twin sons, Nakula and Sahadeva, from the twin gods the Asvins. The five together are known as "Pandavas".

One day, Pandu could not control himself and touched Madri. Immediately, he burnt to ashes. Madri, feeling herself guilty, immolated herself. Kunti was left to tend for all five sons, whose story forms an integral part of the Mahabharata.

Goddess Khodiyar Mata is the Hindu Goddess who appeared in the story of Mamaniya Gadhvi in about AD 700. Khodiyar Mata was one of the seven Daughters of Mamaiya Godhvi and his wife Minal Gadhvi. Khodiyar Maas Ssters are all Joganis, her sisters which are popualry known are Avadaai Mataji, Her cousin sister is Aai shri pithadaai Maa.Khodiyar Matajis real name is Janbai, her sisters names are Avad, Jogad, Togad, Holbaai, Sosaai, Bheejbai, Janbai and one brother mehrak.

One day the doorkeepers did not let him go into the palace. Mamaniya asked for the reason. He was told that a childless man is not worthy of the king's presence. Mamaniya returned home and wanted to ask Lord Shiva for help. When Lord Shiva did not appear, he decided to give his life away as a final sacrifice. Just when he was about to make it, Lord Shiva appeared and took him to the Snake Kingdom - Naglok to see the King of Snakes - Nagdev. After hearing his story full of humiliation, the Nagdev's daughters decided to help too. When Mamaniya came home, with his wife he prepared, as advised by the Nagdev's daughters, eight cradles in expectation of a great event.

One day eight snakes crawled into the house and Mamaniya had suddenly seven daughters and one son. One of the daughters was Khodiyar Maa. After showing many miraculous powers, people consider her to be a goddess and she has temples and shrines too. Her vehicle is the crocodile and she has many other names such as Khodal, Trishuldhari, Maavdi. Also there is a huge temple in matel village, and sometime people see the crocodile while doing the puja for Maa Khodiyar.

Naina Devi Temple in Bilaspur is one of the sacred pilgrimage destinations in Himachal Pradesh. Located amidst the green valleys and serene locales of Bilaspur near Chandigarh, the Naina Devi Temple is considered to be a Shakti Peeth and therefore one of the sacred Hindu Temples which is visited by tourists every year.

A number of myths and legends are centered on the Naina Devi Temple in Himachal Pradesh. According to the Puranas, Sati once burnt herself alive in order to avenge an insult to Lord Shiva. After this Shiva started his Tandava dance taking Sati’s body in a fit of rage. Vishnu with his Chakra then cut her body into 51 pieces. The places where her body parts fell became a Shakti Peeth. In Naina Devi Temple it is believed that the eyes of Sati fell and therefore the name Naina which means the eye.

Goddess Yashoda was the deity, who brought up Krishna, the son of Devaki and Vasudeva, a mythological king. The image of yashoda illustrates an incident of the birth of Krishna.

Vasudeva two wife first Rohini and second is Devaki. After the marriage of Devaki, her brother Kansa had a premonition that her eighth son would kill him. On the request of Vasudeva, Kansa did not kill Devaki immediately. But, Kansa proceeded to kill the first six of Devaki`s sons. When Devaki pregnant for the seventh time, Vishnu transferred the embryo to Rohini`s womb to prevent the child to get murdered by Kansa and it was announced that Devaki had miscarried. When the child was born later, it was called Balarama.

Now, Vishnu was Devaki`s eighth son whom her brother Kansa is confirmed to kill. But, Lord Vishnu managed the situation in such a way that Devaki and Yashoda would give birth at the same time and Yashoda would forget the sex of her child. It happened as planned and on the night of the child`s birth, Vasudeva took his son and left him with Yashoda in exchange for her daughter whom he took back to Devaki. In this way, Vishnu was born as Krishna and was brought up by Nanda and Yashoda in the safety of the country.

On the other hand, Vasudeva and Devaki pretended that their eighth child was a daughter. Yashoda brought up Krishna thinking him to be her own child. But later, she became aware of the fact when Krishna became a young boy and had to leave for Mathura to kill Kansa. But, she still adored Krishna like her own child

Since she is also an extension of Krishna, She is the feminine aspect of God. Thus, in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, God is both male and female. They are one, but Krishna expands into two, Himself and Radharani, for the sake of divine loving pastimes. If they remained as one, then there is no relationship, there are no pastimes, and there can be no dynamic exchange of love.

Goddess Annapurna Mata is the Hindu goddess of food and cooking. Annapurna is empowered with the ability to supply food to an unlimited amount of people. Annapurna means in Sanskrit 'Anna' means food and 'purna' means complete; together the term Annapurna signifies nourishing with food to the fullest. Food is one of the basic necessities of life, and it is no wonder that we say ‘Annam Brahma’, food is God. Annapurna is an incarnation of Parvati. She is often seen giving food to her husband, Shiva. Shiva is seen begging with a skull begging bowl as Annapurna doles out food to her lover. In south India you often find images of Annapurna anywhere people eat. In Hindu belief she is the one endowed with the powers to supply food in a limitless form. She is the divine symbol of nourish and care she provides to her children. In common parlance at Hindu households if people waste food, it is said that they in turn make Annapurna Devi angry.

The most popular temple of Annapurna is at Kashi followed by the one at Horanadu, in Karnataka. There are two other temples of Annapurna, one in Kerala, and one in Gujarat. I have not yet had the pleasure of visiting these last two temples. When I do, I shall surely write about them. Meanwhile, read about my visit to the Annapoorna Temple at Kashi.

A Jayanti is a festival dedicated to Goddess Annapurna Hindu goddess of food and cooking. It is observed on the full moon day in the month of Margashirsh. In some regions an Annapurna Vrat is observed during the period. Goddess Annapurna is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. Annapurna Jayanti date is 2 December.
