Goddess Naina Devi

Naina Devi Temple in Bilaspur is one of the sacred pilgrimage destinations in Himachal Pradesh. Located amidst the green valleys and serene locales of Bilaspur near Chandigarh, the Naina Devi Temple is considered to be a Shakti Peeth and therefore one of the sacred Hindu Temples which is visited by tourists every year.

A number of myths and legends are centered on the Naina Devi Temple in Himachal Pradesh. According to the Puranas, Sati once burnt herself alive in order to avenge an insult to Lord Shiva. After this Shiva started his Tandava dance taking Sati’s body in a fit of rage. Vishnu with his Chakra then cut her body into 51 pieces. The places where her body parts fell became a Shakti Peeth. In Naina Devi Temple it is believed that the eyes of Sati fell and therefore the name Naina which means the eye.

Naina Devi welcomes one and all throughout the year .More so, the volume swells on the auspicious occasion of 3 festivals Navratris, Shravani & Chaitra .The Navaratri celebration in Sept –Oct is the largest fair and two more annual melas i.e. Shravani Mela in July-August & Chaitra mela in March-April , attract lakhs of people of divergent religious faith, caste, creed and culture. The colourful melas become the melting pot of Hindus, Sikhs and others-a unique sight of real Unity in Diversity
